"Norwegian born pianist Norvald Dahl (1978) is now a master student at the highly acclaimed Norwegian academy of music in Oslo. He has been touring and playing professionally for the past ten years, and is associated with groups like the "Wayne Brasel Quartet" and his own quartet, the "Norvald Dahl trio plus Jon Irabagon". Dahl grew up surrounded with music, in particular folk music, and discovered the piano at early age. He soon found improvisation and jazz to be the perfect vehicle for him to express his musicality. Influences from legendary piano players such as Sonny Clark, Herbie Hancock and Keith Jarrett, and a fluid horn like approach to lines, like from saxophonist Joe Henderson, brings together a fresh and personal approach to improvisation.
Some lyricism is also heard in Dahl´s playing! Steeped in Norwegian & Swedish folk music, as well as mastering a ´classical tone´ on the instrument. A more modern approach is also to be heard, such as 12-tone lines and poly harmony concepts from the European contemporary composers. This has established him as a unique and interesting performer and can clearly be demonstrated on his first album as a leader. The drum-less trio-album "Organic Chamber" was to be released in June 2018 on AMP records (Now on LP) and features award-winning American saxophone player Jon Irabagon and Norwegian ECM artist Mats Eilertsen on double bass. The ´Organic Chamber´ received 5/6 Stars in ´Nordiche Musik´! Dahl has also been touring and playing with guitarist Wayne Brasel for the past 15 years, and is clearly developing his style.
New Release - vinyl edition
Dahl´s latest album Organic Chamber was released on 29, 2018 on AMP Music & Records.
A drum-less "chamber group" featuring the award-winning saxophonist Jon Irabagon and ECM artist Mats Eilertsen. Original compositions, ranging from 12-tone music to poly-rhythmical and poly-harmonic concepts, combined with spontaneous interplay and free improvisation.
”This album is a treasure chest of musical gems, which can be discovered anew with each consecutive listening session. Its diversity and richness is exceptional and its delicate non-aggressive expressionism, in contrast to many other Avant-garde offerings, is a true blessing….an instant classic”
